The story

2009

Samuel wanted a better way to read the news. So he built the first version of NewsBlur almost entirely underground on the A train in New York City.

2010

NewsBlur launched to the public and to favorable reviews. Premium accounts launched in October, paying for NewsBlur's increasing server costs.

2012

After entering Y Combinator, Samuel launched Blurblogs, the iPad and Android apps, and better intelligence training. Samuel and his dog Shiloh celebrated with champagne and biscuits.

2013

Google sunsets Reader and thousands of users flee the dying giant. NewsBlur becomes one of the top contenders for the successor to the RSS throne, offering sustainability and longevity by charging cash American dollar for premium accounts.

2026

NewsBlur continues to evolve with AI-powered features, daily briefings, and intelligence training that gets smarter over time. Still independent, still open source, still built for readers who care about the news.

A new sound of an old instrument.
